2012 Hyundai Accent
Hyundai does nothing by half-measures. Just ask the competition. In segment after segment, Hyundai has used its trademark blend of “Fluidic Sculpture” styling, superior technology and stellar value to give rival carmakers fits. With the introduction of the all-new, fourth generation 2012 Accent model line, Hyundai serves notice that it means to dominate yet another segment: The heavily contested subcompact class.
In a time of tightening belts and skyrocketing fuel prices, it’s no surprise that car buyers are flocking to the subcompact class. Hyundai’s reputation for unsurpassed value is sure to draw consumers hoping for a break at the pump and a boost to their bottom lines. One look at the all-new 2012 Accent lineup – boasting best-in-class power, standard fuel economy and cargo space – is guaranteed to seal the deal.
Hyundai offers the Accent in three variations: Four-door GLS (MSRP $12,445), five-door GS and sporty five-door SE.
Among a slate of firsts for the front-wheel drive Accent, the new 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine is the first to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) in the subcompact class. Along with GDI, additional advanced engine technology – such as Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) and variable induction – helps the lightweight all-aluminum four-cylinder deliver 138 hp and 123 lb/ft of torque. That’s the most power available from a normally aspirated engine in this segment, and it translates into the highest specific output in the class at 86 hp per liter. When you consider that a modern 280-hp 3.6-liter V6 only generates 77.7 hp per liter, Accent technology and efficiency becomes even more impressive.

Transferring all that power to the front wheels is a standard six-speed manual transmission. The optional six-speed electronic automatic, available on all models, features SHIFTRONIC® manual control, Hillstart Assist Control and the Hyundai Active ECO function, which alters engine and transmission control for maximum fuel efficiency at the touch of a button. Again, that figure is tops in this class and represents an 18 percent improvement over last year’s Accent outfitted with the manual gearbox. Standard low rolling resistance tires generate less friction and contribute to efficiency.
The Accent also outguns the competition on the technology front, featuring a slew of standard driver-assistance components designed to keep you secure at speed. Motor-driven power steering (another first in class) works in concert with the Electronic Stability Control system (ESC) to help maintain control in slippery conditions and during emergency maneuvers. Traction control is on hand to inspire confidence when the weather takes a turn for the worse while four-wheel antilock disc brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BAS) keep you safe during sudden stops, regardless of road conditions.
Speaking of safety, Hyundai has loaded the Accent with a collection of active and passive restraints that outshines rival subcompacts. Occupant protection is provided by six airbags – including curtain side-impact airbags for the front and rear seats – as well as an item you won’t find on competitors like the Toyota Yaris or Ford Fiesta: Active Front Head Restraints, which can help prevent whiplash during rear collisions.

The Accent refuses to take a backseat in terms of content either, offering a bounty of standard features and outsized option packages. Even the four-door GLS with manual transmission features such niceties as a six-way adjustable driver’s seat with height adjustment, a tachometer, power door locks, tilt steering wheel and a 60/40 folding rear seatback.
Selecting the Comfort Package for the manual-transmission GLS adds air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, cloth door inserts, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with iPod connectivity, USB auxiliary input jacks and satellite radio compatibility. Items in the Comfort Package come standard on the GLS with automatic transmission.
Buyers of automatic-transmission-equipped GLS sedans can opt for the Premium Package, which adds such finery as steering wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth, remote keyless entry, Piano Black interior accents and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels (14-inch steel rims are standard).

The five-door GS model adds items such as tinted glass, dual vanity mirrors, a rear wiper and body-colored exterior mirrors and door handles. Folding the 60/40-split rear seatback on five-door models yields 21.2 cubic feet of cargo volume. Yet again, that figure is best in class, and better than the cargo capacity of some larger compact models including the MAZDA3 five-door and the Toyota Matrix.
The top-of-the-line five-door SE delivers a touch of luxury with uplevel amenities that include premium cloth seats, front foglights, a rear spoiler and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shiftknob. Cruise control is standard on the SE, and also on the GLS with automatic transmission.
For all its best-in-class qualities and segment-breaking refinement, the Accent offers the one attribute buyers seem to value above all others: Peace of mind. Thanks go to the industry-best Hyundai warranty package, which includes a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, as well as 24/7 roadside assistance for 60 months/unlimited miles.
True to form, Hyundai has introduced an all-new subcompact that outdoes the competition at every turn: The 2012 Accent.
